New BMW X4 confirmed as Spartanburg celebrates its 2 millionth vehicle

New engines for the BMW 1 Series 5-door Hatch
March 2012 sees the introduction of three new powertrains for the BMW 1 Series 5-door Hatch – the 116d EfficientDynamics, 125d and 125i – completing the range’s engine line-up.

The BMW 116d EfficientDynamics is powered by a 116hp, four-cylinder 1.6-litre TwinPower Turbo diesel engine which powers the car from zero to 62mph in 10.5 seconds, while peak torque of 260Nm ensures a smooth delivery of power. Emitting just 99g/km CO2 and returning 74.3mpg makes this the most efficient series-production BMW to date. These impressive economy figures are due to optimized features including a centrifugal pendulum, longer final drive ratio, Optimum Shift Indicators, 10mm lower suspension and reduced rolling resistance tyres.

Based on the current SE specification, the BMW 116d EfficientDynamics comes with 16-inch light alloy V-spoke wheels, Bluetooth hands-free with USB audio interface, front foglights, multifunction leather steering wheel and BMW Professional Radio with freestanding 6.5-inch Display and iDrive controller.

Thanks to its low CO2 emissions of just 99g/km the BMW 116d EfficientDynamics qualifies for the lowest BIK rate of 13 per cent, while offering a 100 per cent write down allowance in the first year, a 100 per cent discount on the London Congestion Charge and zero Vehicle Excise Duty.

The BMW 116d EfficientDynamics is on sale from March 2012 with prices starting from £20,885 OTR.

M Sport arrives on the BMW 1 Series
From March 2012 the BMW 1 Series 5-door Hatch will be available in M Sport guise. In addition to the SE specification it will include exterior styling cues including M aerodynamic bodystyling, 18-inch M Star-spoke light alloy wheels, High-gloss Shadowline exterior trim and kidney grille with extra-wide high-gloss black vertical slats.

The interior gets the M Sport treatment with Sports seats in exclusive Anthracite Hexagon cloth and Alcantara upholstery, Aluminium Hexagon interior trim with Estoril Blue trim finishers, Anthracite headlining, M designation door sill finishers, M Sport multifunction steering wheel and an M Sport short-shift gear lever. M Sport suspension, lowering the car by 10mm, completes the package.

Prices for the new BMW 1 Series 5-door M Sport Hatch range from £22,510 OTR for a BMW 116i M Sport to £27,820 OTR for a BMW 125d M Sport.

125d and 125i complete the BMW 1 Series 5-door Hatch line up
Two new engines will be available on the new BMW 1 Series 5-door Hatch from March 2012. The 125i and 125d, only available in M Sport guise, both feature ventilated front and rear brake discs and dual chrome exhaust tailpipes as standard.

The BMW 125d features a 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine, with two-stage twin turbo. Developing 218hp and up to 450Nm of torque, it launches from zero to 62mph in a mere 6.5 seconds. This impressive performance doesn’t hamper the cars economy with it returning 57.6mpg and emitting 129g/km CO2 on the combined cycle.

The BMW 125i introduces BMW’s latest 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine with TwinScroll turbo. Accelerating from zero to 62mph in just 6.5 seconds it develops 310Nm of torque and 218hp, while still managing to return 44.1mpg and emit CO2 emissions of just 152g/km.

The BMW 125i M Sport costs from £26,030 OTR while the BMW 125d M Sport is available from £27,820 OTR.

The BMW 1 Series Coupé and Convertible Exclusive and Sport Plus Edition
Two new special editions offering enhanced standard equipment, alloy wheels and unique upholstery will be available on the BMW 1 Series Coupé and Convertible.

Building on the existing M Sport trim level, the Sport Plus Edition features a package of styling and functional enhancements designed to highlight the dynamic qualities of the BMW 1 Series. The exterior is enhanced by 18-inch M double-spoke light alloy wheels, Chrome kidney grille with black vertical slats, Dark Line rear lights and Black mirror casings. Inside exclusive Boston leature upholstery lines the seats while a Bluetooth handsfree facility with USB audio interface are both included as standard.

The BMW 1 Series Exclusive Edition builds on the Coupé and Convertible ES specification, adding 17-inch Star-spoke light alloy wheels, Chromeline exterior trim, Oxide Silver mirror casings, Chrome kidney grille and Chrome exhaust tailpipes. The interior is bolstered by the addition of bespoke Boston leather upholstery, Brushed Aluminum trim, BWM Edition door sill finishers and BMW Professional radio with single CD player, with MP3 playback capability. Additionally the BMW 1 Series Coupé gains Anthracite headlining as standard.

The BMW 1 Series Exclusive Edition and Sport Plus Edition are priced at £500 over the cost of the standard SE and M Sport Coupé and Convertible models, offering customers a saving of up to £1,815 and £1,450 respectively.

BMW Z4: The fastest roof in the west
BMW’s award-winning Z4 Roadster is now available with a revised folding hard-top for greater ownership enjoyment. Engineers in Munich have enhanced the elegant two-piece folding roof with a reinforced hydraulic system so that it can now be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 25mph. Previously the roof could not be lowered while on the move. The BMW Z4 is offered as sDrive20i, sDrive28i and sDrive35i with prices starting from £29,480 OTR rising to £39,450 OTR. The BMW Z4 remains a popular sportscar purchase in the UK with some 2,231 sold in 2011.

BMW 3 Series: Engine range expanded
BMW’s class-leading 3 Series Saloon range is to expand in March with the introduction of three new entry-level engines. The BMW 316d and 318d Saloons feature a BMW TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder diesel engine which has a common-rail direct injection system combined with a single turbocharger with variable vane technology. Both these new diesel engines can come with the optional 8-speed automatic transmission.

With its 116hp engine the 316d Saloon delivers peak torque of 260Nm between 1,750rpm and 2,500rpm. Such low-down performance makes for swift and effortless progress. The driving characteristics are particularly smooth when the engine is fitted with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. In this combination fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are better than the manual transmission. Meanwhile, the BMW 318d has a 143hp all-aluminium engine with 320Nm of torque between 1,750rpm and 2,500rpm which enables it to post respectable fuel consumption figures while still achieving sprightly performance.

Joining the two diesel engines is the four-cylinder powerplant of the 320i Saloon that is built at Hams Hall in the Midlands. This TwinPower Turbo engine with High Precision Direct Injection also features VALVETRONIC and Bi-VANOS for optimum efficiency. These factors plus other advances result in all round efficiency savings of around seven per cent.

All three new engine derivatives go on sale in March, 2012.

BMW Blue Performance in the UK
For the first time in the UK the BMW 320d EfficientDynamics Saloon, the BMW 120d Hatch, BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Saloon, BMW 520d Saloon and Touring and the BMW 530d Saloon and Touring will be available with the option ofBluePerformance technology for £995. This provides a storage catalytic converter which reduces the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of the vehicle, thereby providing compatibility with the strict EU6 emission standards due for introduction in September 2014.

The EU6 emission standards reduce the cap on NOx emissions by over 50 per cent, compared with current EU5 regulations, to 80mg/km. Combined emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrous oxides are also capped at 170mg/km.

New BMW X4 confirmed as Spartanburg celebrates its 2 millionth vehicle
Frank-Peter Arndt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production, has confirmed that a new BMW X4 will be built at Plant Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA. The announcement came as Arndt revealed a further US$900 million will be invested in the facility between now and 2014.

“This is in response to rising global demand for our BMW X models and the expansion of the BMW X family to include the BMW X4.” he said. “This will create 300 new jobs by the end of this year. This will allow us to produce 350,000 units in Spartanburg in the mid-term,”

This is the first indication a BMW X4 will be offered following the global success of the BMW X6, but the car is still three years away from introduction.

Production at Plant Spartanburg first started in 1994 and news of the latest planned investment will mean BMW AG’s total commitment to the area now nearly tops US$6 billion. The plant has already undergone four expansions and produced six different BMW models (318i, Z3, Z4, X5, X6, X3) and their variants over the years.

This week also saw the 2 millionth vehicle roll off the production line. The historic BMW X3 xDrive35i M Sport in Vermillion Red with Oyster Nevada leather interior will be retained by the plant and displayed in the museum. In 2011 the plant produced 276,065 vehicles for more than 130 markets around the world, representing an increase of 73 per cent over the previous year. The BMW X3 also played a major role in this positive development. Global sales of this highly-successful model rose 156 per cent in 2011 to reach a total of 117,944 vehicles.

With the unique appeal of customised cars pressing the buttons for many collectors, classic car auctioneer Historics is bringing four sets of whacky wheels to its sale at Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands, on Saturday February 18th 2012.

No stranger to selling truly individual vehicles having previously presented a Batmobile, Ghostbuster car and Monkeemobile at auction, Historics will use its first sale of 2012 to showcase the ‘Bugaloos Buggy’ – made famous in the children’s TV show of the same name in the early 1970’s – the equally radical 23ft, 6-engined ‘Snake Pit’, also designed by Barris, as well as a set of 600bhp Bunkbeds built by Bob Reisner and an original Hans Trippel Amphicar.

Shown on the NBC network between 1970 and 1972, the Paramount Studio producers of The Bugaloos commissioned George Barris – creator of the original Batmobile and Munster Koach as well as later versions of the KITT car for Knight Rider – to build a Bugaloos Buggy that was compact, eye-catching and reflected the overall fun of the show.

Using a four-passenger fibreglass body mounted on a Volkswagen floorplan, the car was built to look like a bug – reflecting the programme’s characters who could fly and walk on water – with wings set on a T-shaped roll bar and oversized headlights designed to look like eyes.

The fully-fendered chassis sat on one-piece Ansen Spring alloy wheels shod with Firestone tyres, with the orange-spoked centres matching the green, yellow and orange paintwork used to mirror the markings of a butterfly.

The interior was fitted with four custom bucket seats featuring a leaf-like design, and the car further equipped with four Capitol Communications telephones and Muntz stereo tape cartridge players.

Originally sold at a ‘Cars of the Stars’ collector car auction at the Sheraton-Universal Hotel in 1983, the car resurfaced in France over 20 years later, since when it has undergone a sympathetic restoration.

With a well-known history behind it, the car is fully street legal and is now presented in superb condition to be enjoyed once more, with Historics estimating offers in the region of £12,000 – £15,000.

The bizarre, multi-engined, 23ft long Snake Pit took the team of Barris, Harry Bradley, Joe Bailon and Jay Ohrberg four years to bring together, with the ultimate aim to take on speed records.

Fitted with no less than six synchronised Ford Cobra V8 engines – each displacing 351 cubic inches – the Snake Pit boasted an estimated 2,000 horsepower, and with 12 Holley four-barrel carburettors, 48 exhausts, two Ford C-6 automatic transmissions and a pair of Pontiac rear axles, the Snake Pit is all about extraordinary figures.

Indeed, Joe Bailon, a car customiser also famous for introducing the three part process used to create candy paint colours, added no less than 30 coats of lacquer to compliment the orange and pearl white paintwork.

Estimated to be worth in excess of $100,000 when completed, the non-running Snake Pit is offered for sale at Historics next auction at No Reserve.

The sale will also bring every boys dream of a racing car bed to life in the form of a 600bhp set of Bunkbeds.

Although a non-runner, the Bunkbeds boast a 600bhp V8 engine, as well as automatic transmission, disc brakes all round and super-wide Goodyear tyres, and could in theory be steered from the comfort of the top or bottom bunk.

Guaranteed to give a good night’s sleep, the Bunkbeds would also provide the perfect promotional plug for any bed shop or mattress maker, and Historics expect offers in the region of £12,000 – £15,000 for the superbly crafted custom car.

If that doesn’t float the boat of car collectors, an original Amphicar designed by Hanns Trippel is also being presented at Historics forthcoming sale.

One of just 99 right hand drive models built and a believed 20 to still exist, the 1965 Amphicar was previously owned by the French born restaurateur Didier Milinaire (stepson of the 13th Duke of Bedford), and caused more than a ripple of excitement when it appeared on the Thames during the world famous Henley Royal Regatta.

Powered by a 1147cc Triumph Herald engine, the ‘Model 770’ Amphicar could achieve 7 knots in the water and 70 mph on the land. Although in need of a little time and investment having not run for some time, the Amphicar is supplied with a V5 document and Historics anticipate bids in the region of £13,000 – £17,000 on the day of the sale.

For more information, and to attend the Historics at Brooklands auction at Mercedes-Benz World on the afternoon of Saturday February 18th, call 0800 988 3838, e-mail: auctions@historics.co.uk, or see the website, www.historics.co.uk. Entry by catalogue only, available prior to, or on the day of the auction.

ŠKODA UK Motorsport driver Andreas Mikkelsen’s 2012 rally season has begun in fine style after he scored victory on the opening round of the Norwegian Rally Championship, the snowy Mountain Rally in Norway.

Co-driven by Ola Fløene, the reigning Intercontinental Rally Challenge Champion won the Gol-based event in his IRC title-winning ŠKODA Fabia S2000, which is now owned by his manager, Erik Veiby, and was run under the team Evenrally banner. Andreas finished 7.2 seconds ahead of WRC regular driver Mads Østberg, who was driving a more power Regional Rally Car.

Østberg took the lead on the short opening stage, but Andreas – who was doing the event as a pre-season test – fought back to claim victory after all six stages had been completed.

Andreas: “It’s very nice to start the new season off with a rally win, and I am very pleased. It’s a long time since I’ve driven on snow and ice and having been away for two years it was great to rally in Norway again. We had to drive fast to beat Mads and even though we were here to test, competing against such a good driver meant we really had to focus on our driving – so it was a very good test situation for us.”

Third generation version of sought-after Audi all-terrain Avant promises to build on its predecessors’ go-anywhere appeal

New generation version of highly successful all-terrain A6 expected to open for UK order in February priced from £43,145 OTR – first deliveries in spring
Three engines available initially – 3.0 TFSI with 310PS and 440Nm, 3.0 TDI with 204PS and 450Nm, 3.0 TDI with 245PS and 580Nm
Fuel consumption reduced by as much as 20 per cent
Four-level adaptive air suspension as standard

The advanced Audi A6 is about to add more brawn to complement its highly sophisticated electronic ‘brain’ as the third generation A6 allroad quattro with its customarily tougher stance and four-level adaptive air suspension makes its world debut. Due to become available to order in the UK next month priced from £43,145 OTR, the A6 allroad quattro will reach its first customers here in the spring.

The first two generations of the allroad quattro, launched in 2000 and 2006, enjoyed considerable success, and Audi hopes to build on this in the latest car by combining their outstanding versatility with even greater efficiency that is reflected in fuel economy improvements of up to 20 per cent.

At 4.94 metres long, 1.90 metres wide and 1.47 metres tall, the latest A6 allroad quattro sits six centimetres higher than the Avant. Like the saloon and ‘standard’ Avant, it has been constructed using the latest Audi ultra lightweight construction principles, with aluminium components making up roughly 20 percent of its body. Total vehicle weight has been reduced by as much as 70 kilograms compared with the previous model.

Distinguishing allroad quattro features include extended side sills, more widely flared wings and vertical slats within the single-frame grille. Stainless steel guards protect the underbody at the front and rear of the car, and the exhaust system ends in two large, flattened tailpipes. The roof rails are mounted on double bars.

The wheel arches, bumpers and sills are painted in a contrasting colour, but can be body-coloured if the optional aluminium exterior package is specified. The colour Java Brown is available exclusively for the new A6 allroad quattro.

The interior of the Audi A6 allroad quattro offers plenty of space thanks to the long wheelbase of 2,910 millimetres. It features a clean, elegant design, outstanding ergonomics and exemplary workmanship. A function that depicts the car’s pitch has been added to the MMI operating system, the soft keys of which are finished in aluminium. MMI is a standard feature, as is the Driver’s Information System with efficiency program. A comprehensive package of restraint systems helps to mitigate the consequences of an accident.

Outstanding versatility

The luggage compartment has a capacity of 565 litres. Latches within it make it easy to fold down the rear seats, increasing luggage capacity to 1,680 litres, and numerous standard and optional features underscore its practicality. These include a rail system into which a load-securing kit for dividing the luggage compartment can be inserted, tensioning straps on the left wall and a double loading floor.

Audi offers a wide choice of options for the new A6 allroad quattro. A head-up display can project important information onto the windscreen, ambient lighting can bathe the interior with subtle LED light, and the widely adjustable comfort seats seats offer a ventilation and massage function. Additional highlights include four-zone automatic air conditioning, a panoramic glass roof and the advanced key, which enables access, start-up and locking without the need to remove the key from the driver’s pocket.

Topping the modular range of infotainment options is the hard drive-based navigation system MMI Navigation plus with touchpad operation (MMI touch) and whole-word voice control. Its power-retractable eight-inch monitor displays extremely sharp, high-contrast images. A Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 15 speakers can also be added for maximum listening pleasure.

In-car internet access

The new A6 allroad quattro is also state of the art when it comes to connection technology. The Mobile Phone Preparation – High option connects it to the Internet via UMTS, and a WLAN hotspot lets passengers surf the internet and e-mail. Tailored services for the driver, such as the all-new Audi traffic information online function, which uses mobile phone signals to pinpoint traffic congestion or accident blackspots in real time, or Audi music stream web radio, are delivered right to the car. Attractive services from Google, including Google Earth, Google Street View and voice-activated POI search, are also available.

The Audi assistance and safety systems lend even more confidence to driving. The radar-based adaptive cruise control with stop & go function always keeps the new A6 allroad quattro at the proper distance from the car ahead. At speeds below 19mph, the system initiates maximum braking in the event of an impending collision. ACC stop & go works closely together with the Audi pre sense safety system, which is available in a number of configurations.

Audi active lane assist helps the driver to stay in lane; Audi side assist helps when changing lanes. The night vision assistant with marking of detected pedestrians reduces the stress of driving in the dark. The driver information system with rest recommendation function detects when the driver is getting tired and recommends taking a rest.

A variety of high-end systems help take the stress out of parking. The park assist system with 360° display takes over the steering; the parking system plus with 360° camera provides good vision in all directions. Four small wide-angle cameras record images of the vehicle’s immediate surroundings, which can then be displayed from a variety of perspectives on the MMI monitor.

The new A6 allroad quattro will initially be available in the UK with a choice of three powerful and highly cultivated V6 engines – one TFSI petrol engine and two TDI units. All are 3.0-litre engines with turbocharging and direct injection. They make use of important technologies from the Audi modular efficiency platform – the start-stop system and innovative thermal management. Their fuel consumption has been reduced by as much as 20 per cent compared with the previous model.

The 3.0 TFSI, which is boosted by a mechanically driven supercharger, produces 310PS and 440 Nm of torque. It powers the A6 allroad quattro from zero to 62mph in 5.9 seconds on the way to an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Its combined economy figure is an impressive 31.7mpg.

Two TDI options

The two variants of the 3.0 TDI produce 204PS and 245PS; torque values are 450Nm and 580Nm. The entry-level version achieves a combined economy figure of 46.3mpg, corresponding to 159 g CO2/km. All three engines are paired with the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. With its wide ratio spreads, this transmission is a major contributor to the efficiency of the A6 allroad quattro. The driver can operate it manually, using either the gear lever or optional paddles on the steering wheel.

The quattro permanent four-wheel drive system is paired with torque vectoring. During dynamic driving this system brakes the wheels on the inside of a bend, which are under a reduced load, before they start to skid to further enhance traction and handling. The optional sport differential distributes the power in continuously variable proportions between the rear wheels.

The chassis of the A6 allroad quattro combines agility with comfort. The new electromechanical power steering is sensitive and highly efficient, and an optional dynamic steering system is also available to adjust the steering ratio to the speed driven.

With the Audi drive select system, the driver can vary the function of the steering, the air suspension, the throttle pedal, the automatic transmission, the sport differential, the automatic air conditioning, the lighting and the adaptive cruise control. In Efficiency mode, these systems work as economically as possible; their function can be very freely configured in Individual mode.

The adaptive air suspension, which combines air suspension with controlled damping, comes as standard. It lowers the body by 15 millimetres at high speed and raises it by 35 millimetres at the push of a button. This allroad mode is suitable for rough terrain. Furthermore, the driver can select a lift mode at low speeds. An additional ten millimetres enables the new Audi A6 allroad quattro to also handle major irregularities in the road surface. A hill descent assist function for steep downhill passages is also included. This limits the speed to between 6mph and 12mph, depending on the surface.

Lex Autolease and BCA combined for a special sale at BCA Bedford on 10th January, featuring 400 end-of-lease cars that included with a special selection of prestige and sporting models.

The sale attracted over 300 buyers to the Bedford auction centre with a further 533 logging on to bid via BCA’s Live Online internet bidding service. Over 90% of the cars sold on the day for a £3 million-plus turnover that achieved 99% of CAP Clean.

Star of the show was the 2006 Fisker Tramonto – the only right hand drive model in existence and one of just 15 built. A true supercar, the Tramonto is based on the Mercedes-Benz SL 55 AMG and was created by the Californian based company founded by former Aston Martin head designer Henrik Fisker. The car was painted in Titanium Quartz Metallic with two-tone Sand interior in finest Italian leather and finished with Aluminium and bare Carbon Fibre touches. Following some very competitive bidding in the auction hall and online, it sold for £50,000, calculated as 172% of CAP.

0858 Mini Cooper 1.6 40,000 miles £7,100 106% CAP

Robert Sturley Southern Area Auction Manager for Lex Autolease said: “This was a very strong result and shows there is plenty of confidence in the used car market early in the year. BCA once again delivered plenty of buying power, both in the auction hall and online, and bidding was very competitive throughout the sale.”

Alan Gupwell BCA Corporate Account Manager for Lex Autolease commented “The high end prestige market has a strong following with buyers and themed events such as this create a great deal of interest. However it is notable that there was demand across a wide range of cars in this sale, underlining the strong start to trading in 2012 and the uniformly excellent quality of vehicles offered by Lex Autolease.”
Tuning and styling specialists re-interpret iQ, Yaris and GT 86
Special versions produced by GRMN, G’s, TRD,TOM’S and Modellista
Presentation also includes race cars and customised production models

The 2012 Tokyo Auto Salon – the world’s largest custom car show – givesToyota a showcase for new interpretations of its models, from off-the-wall concepts to race-tuned specials. Leading the way at this year’s show are new concept cars from some ofJapan’s leading design and race engineering houses.

GRMN – Gazoo Racing tuned by MN – is showing a second-generation of its iQ Supercharger prototype, a model scheduled for a limited (100 units) production run later this year. The car is powered by a further development of the supercharged 1.33-litre engine previously used by GRMN in the iQ 130G MT, delivering 128bhp (95kW) and 180Nm. It also features a six-speed, close ratio transmission, uprated brakes, sports suspension and a tuned dual exhaust system.

As well as hotter performance, the car gains a new look thanks to a full body kit, including rear spoiler, sports seats and instrumentation and 16-inch Enkei alloys.

GRMN has also got to work on new Yaris, building a Turbo Concept. Based on the three-door Yaris (called Vitz inJapan), it carries a 178bhp (132kW) 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and is track-prepared with revised suspension, improved brakes and 18-inch rims.

Even in showroom guise, the new GT 86 has the looks and performance to command attention. The Tokyo Salon shows that package taken to another level in two new styling interpretations from TRD and Modellista that make full use of modified parts and accessories.

Key handling features added to TRD Performance Line GT 86 include a reworked suspension with new front and rear anti-roll bars, a carbon front strut, rear diffuser, additional cross-bracing and a high-response exhaust system. Finished in Satin White Pearl, the coupe gains a full body kit with skirts and spoilers, 18-inch alloy wheels and sports seats and meters in the cabin. Likewise, the Modellista interpretation of the “hachi-roku” (eight-six) shows some of the customisation possibilities the car offers.

These versions are shown alongside the Gazoo Racing FT-86 which competed at the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2011. The team has announced it will return to the event this year with a specially prepared GT 86.

G Sports have produced custom show cars based on the Japanese market Mark X saloon and Vellfire large MPV, and Modellista andTOM’S have, respectively, upped the style factor of the full hybrid Toyota Aqua hatchback and Prius+ MPV. The European version of Prius + is due to reach the UK market later this year.

At the wilder end of the spectrum, the Toyota Auto Fan Club has built a solar-electric powered version of the famous 2000GT sports car and the Toyota Engineering Society has crafted the TES-ERA EV, a futuristic EV coupe.

Each new BMW 3 Series is a harmonious combination of BMW tradition and modernity, of classic and innovative elements that constantly interpret the desired family resemblance in a most exciting way.

Munich. During the course of more than three and a half decades, the face of the BMW 3 Series has constantly evolved. Designers have always managed to incorporate dynamics, innovation and aesthetics into a harmonious, modern and future-oriented overall concept, whilst at the same time preserving traditional values. As a result, each BMW 3 Series has retained its unmistakable brand identity and can be identified as a BMW at very first glance. However, the roots of the BMW Series reach back as far as the 1960s….

As a manufacturer of sporty, elegant sedans, BMW had at that time already developed a characteristic profile. With a notchback body design, front-mounted engines and rear-wheel drive, a basic principle was established back then (BMW 1500/2000) that still prevails to this very day. With the arrival of the BMW 1600 in 1966, the 2-door 02 Series, which produced such famous models as the 1600ti or the 2002tii, was launched on to the automotive market and eventually replaced by the BMW 3 Series.

The presentation of the first BMW 3 Series in July 1975 marked the beginning of one of the most remarkable success stories in BMW model history. Although the 2-door sedan bore a strong resemblance to the BMW 5 Series introduced in 1972, the market witnessed the launch of an entirely new vehicle with compact dimensions and a sporting character. The predominant design feature of the front end was also the brand’s characteristic symbol, which was clearly identifiable even from a distance – the BMW kidney grille.

1975-1983. The design of the first BMW 3 Series is characterised by large windows, a distinctive wedge shape and, of course, BMW’s brand-typical face, the front end being dominated by the kidney grille vividly protruding from the radiator cover to continue up slightly scoop-shaped along the bonnet to the windscreen. With short overhangs and a track width of 1,364 millimetres at the front, the new sports sedan boasts a rather low-slung appearance. Vertically mounted indicators flank the large round headlights on each side. On the occasion of its presentation, BMW gives the new model best chances of success: “Timeless and without superficial gallery play, the design of BMW 3 Series will also become a trendsetter for the next decade.”

1982-1993. In 1982, the second generation of the BMW 3 Series presents itself as a worthy successor. As a result of a sensitively enhanced design and optimised aerodynamics, the new model has gained significantly in presence. The approx. 35 mm increase in track width also contributes towards the sedan’s distinctively powerful look. Finally, on the whole, the body appears smoother and rounder, the sleek front end being the result of extensive wind tunnel tests, which is not least underscored by a drag coefficient of 0.37. The now low-slung front end boasting the flat BMW kidney grille elongates the entire front end of the vehicle, particularly as the double headlights now featured on all 3 Series models are located far on the outside. The smooth transition into all adjoining body surfaces not only determines the characteristic shape, but also ensures a good air flow around the vehicle. The low-set bonnet with its wide scoop rising gently from the front enhances aerodynamics, its surface not being interrupted by air intake openings.

1990-1997. In 1990, the time had apparently come to replace the soberly designed BMW 3 Series with an exceedingly elegant successor model. It is an entirely newly conceived sports sedan, the dimensions of which have increased all round, both surprising and pleasing the public to an equal extent. Besides the slim silhouette, the smooth front end of the new model is immediately evident, as the double headlights are now conjointly mounted behind a glass cover. In addition to dynamic lines and a distinctive wedge shape, a significantly lower bonnet and a raised rear end, technical refinements such as windows installed flush with the car body and targeted diffuser cooling air circulation inside the engine compartment also contribute towards the outstanding drag coefficient of 0.29 (316i). This BMW has therefore virtually nothing in common with its predecessor, but the family resemblance still remains recognisable. Thanks to typical styling elements such as the kidney grille and double headlights, it is still obviously a BMW, even though the dominating design element and symbol of the brand was now flatter and wider.

1998-2005. When the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series is launched in May 1998, the compact sports sedan is some 40 mm wider and even the track width has increased by 60 mm compared with its predecessor. At that time, BMW designers describe the styling of the front end as follows: “On the whole and in essential details, the front end, the typical BMW face, has been reinterpreted, but it is still that unmistakable 3 Series face.” The double kidney grille is integrated into the bonnet and, together with the dual round headlights located behind clear glass covers, again shapes the powerful character of the new BMW 3 Series’ face. Compared with the front ends of the BMW 5 and 7 Series, the lower headlight surrounds form a distinctive separation: Here, the curvatures of the reflectors located in the exterior bodywork are finely outlined by a slight indication of curvatures, resulting in a clearly visible interruption of the horizontal line above the bumper.

2005-2011. With the launch of the fifth generation in the year 2005, BMW brings to the market a BMW 3 Series that is strong in character and exudes significantly more presence and power than its predecessor. Only a year after the market launch, the new styling strategy and the progressive design vocabulary gain the highest level of recognition, resulting in the BMW 3 Series being presented with the “World Car of the Year” award in New York. Members of the creative BMW design team are already convinced of the value of their work beforehand: “Within the series, the design has consistently developed in both small and larger steps. The new 3 Series represents a particularly high level of advancement in the vehicle’s design history.” Although the car makes only a proportionally moderate leap compared to the predecessor model, it does stand out from it significantly and noticeably. With the double kidney grille and dual headlights curved at the top, it exhibits the typical front end of a modern BMW – a focused facial expression.

From 2011. The sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series expresses essential qualities of the sedan such as agility, sportiness and dynamics in an entirely new way. Newly interpreted classic design features find a new lease on life and are reminiscent of the models of the 1960s. The large, almost seamlessly integrated radiator cowling with embedded headlights and kidney grille also characterised the distinctive face of the first BMW 3 Series in 1975. On the sports sedan of the year 2011, the modern dual headlights with LED eyebrows extend as far as the kidney grille frame, also forming a continuous optical unit spanning an arch to the historical predecessors in a modern way. The athletically arched bonnet additionally accentuates the front end, emphasising the car’s presence and sporting appeal. Instead of a central air intake, the new BMW 3 Series has two larger air intakes located to the outside below the headlights. Additional vertical air vents are located on the outer edge of the air intakes, creating the so-called “air curtain”. By means of enhanced aerodynamic airflow in the vicinity of the front wheels it facilitates a reduction in fuel consumption at high speeds and contributes towards an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.26.

Although more than 35 years lie between the first generation of 1975 and the current BMW 3 Series, both front ends attest to an unmistakable brand identity and, in spite of the great difference in age, are both immediately recognisable as members of the same family. Then as now, the design bestows the BMW sedan with its styling and personality, expressing contemporary and trendsetting dynamics, innovation and aesthetics. Hence, each generation of the compact sports sedan stands for BMW tradition and modernity alike. And each model combines classic and innovative elements that interpret this theme in their very own way.
